I have planned a trip to Stuttgart for my husband, brother and nephew for the end of September, and have made hotel reservations for them at Zur Weinsteige. This will be their first time in Germany , and I would like to make their trip as smooth as possible, at least at the beginning while they become confortable with the area.
I would appreciate hearing some recommendations for transportation between STR and the hotel. I think I would prefer having a car and driver meet them rather than them hiring a cab, especially as they will be coming off an overnight flight. Any companies that you have used before and would recommend?
I take it that is one of their two parts of their hotel on Hohenheimerstrasse. If so, they can take the S-bahn from the airport two stops to the Leinfelden one, exit and then take the U-5 into Stuttgart. This U-bahn has nice views much better than the S-bahn that runs underground most of the way and is right in front of this hotel.
They need to get out at the Dobelstrasse stop, cross the street to their left in the direction of travel, and the hotel is just down the street to their left. This avoids the much longer trip by S-bahn to the main train station then a U-bahn ride back to the hotel.
While there, they can also get information on Stuttgart and its surroundings and also ask advice for the public transportation tickets that best meeet their needs. Some tickets are only available to residents of hotels. Otherwise, a 3-zone group day ticket from the airport would probably best meet their immediate needs.
If you are not aware of it, the world's second largest beer festival will be on, the Cannstatter Volksfest www. Also, in nearby Ludwigsburg 3-zone ticket will be the world's largest pumpkin exhibition in www. Coupled with the longest and best palace tours that I've had in Europe and a visit to the fairytale garden nextdoor, it makes for an unbeatable day. For things to see and do in and around Stuttgart, have a look at what I wrote in 1 of tripadvisor.
Oh, the public transportation website is www. Marco, I have been reading your many helpful posts on Trip Advisor and have already downloaded many of your suggestions. Thank you for responding to my post. I wondered how hard it would be for them to navigate from arrivals to the taxi stand - they do not speak German - so I am glad to know that they will be able to get tourist information right in the terminal and then make their way to the taxi stand.
I am certain they will end up riding on public transportation, but will need some time to become acquainted with it. They are indeed planning on attending the Canstatter Volkfest and hope that the tourist office or the hotel concierge will be able to be of assistance to them in traveling to and from the hotel there.
They are also amenable to renting a car for day trips. My husband has experience in driving in the UK, Italy and France , but as his number one navigator me will not be along, it would have to be an easy rental process and navigation system. Many of the publications on Stuttgart have public transportation maps in them, so by carrying one of these they should be able to get around Stuttgart quite easily, and also a city map should have a map of the transportation system.
I would always buy the tourist information office's map for probably 0. For the Cannstatter Volksfest from their hotel, they just have to take one of the U-bahns downhill from the Dobelstrasse stop 2 stops to Charlottenplatz where they can catch the special U which will take them to the center of the Wasen fairgrounds , or the U-1, U-2 or U which will also go to the Mercedesstrasse stop at the west edge of the fairgrounds.
As they exit the train at Charlottenplatz, they have to walk along the platform in the direction of travel and take the first steps down on the right for the deeper line. Although walking into the center of Stuttgart will be quite easy, they might want to always take a U-bahn back as the walk will steepen as they start climbing the valley wall on which their hotel sits. Coming from the center of Stuttgart, the only U-bahn on that line that will turn off before Dobelstrasse is the U which turns off at the stop just before Olgaeck and is a nice one to ride for nice views over Stuttgart and also goes to the world's first modern TV tower.
At the Eugensplatz stop the first after it turns off the main line are a nice fountain with excellent views over Stuttgart and the ice cream shop Pinguin which we think has Stuttgart's best ice cream.
Their hotel sits on Hwy 27 as it descends into Stuttgart near the bottom of the hill, so getting anywhere by car should also be easy besides using public transportation. Their only problem will be returning from the south where it will be difficult to make a U-turn to their hotel as the U-bahn tracks sit in the middle of the street.
I haven't paid much attention to doing that as I've never had a reason to do so, but you can definitely do this by making a right turn at the traffic light at Alexanderstrasse, go up the hill a short distance to where it's possible to do a U-turn by the first cross street, and then turn left at the light for going back up Hohenheimerstrasse. This is also where the entrance to the S-bahn is. I think that they should use public transportation for accessing their hotel from the airport as it is much cheaper, and with a group day ticket they can travel with it the rest of the day about Stuttgart and to the Volksfest if they want.
