Remarks on the paintings of Tina Haber.
Translation: Neal Wach. The depth of the actual place seemed artifical. Francis Crick was by no means a mystic. They seem to have emanated from the dream sleep of painting which, in its act of self-cleansing, has called up all those countless, worn-out images clogging its memory to overflowing.
With these motifs, painting in its dreams is also relieved of the humiliation it has endured through a multitude of banal reproductions. The picture appears to have been put in an acid bath: green melts like running water from the lawn and crowns of trees, blotches of bright red and lush yellow obtrude from the fields of blooms. Through the repeated watery applications of color the motifs selected become crude. On the rough surfaces of the often wall-sized gouaches that she assembles from multiple, panels of hardboard, new contemplative landscapes are created.
As the motifs disintegrate into color, light and shadow and become ever-further detached from their real subjects, the true essence of their creation appears — all the individual and collective memories and longings with which they are charged, the mass-media and art-historical transformations through which they have passed, the populist attitude towards life that characterizes their collection as souvenir, furnishing or decoration.
On the surface, the images are exhausted. Although over-loaded with well-known symbolism, they are devoid of true substance. This leads to a disparity that can take on an utterly eerie quality. It is at this point that I situate myself with my painting. I am looking for a natural state of these worn out motifs that is still palpable.
She does not allow her motifs to come to rest, she confers no lost dignity upon them, but instead, she further exhausts them to extremes. The dark, earthbound present is connected with the light, transcendental hereafter — a promising future.
Similar vistas are also to be found in catalogues for package tours or even again on photo wallpaper. The arched portico seems as dark and heavy as a prison dungeon reduced to pure form. One looks out directly, without distracting details, upon an imaginary, otherworldly landscape in which bright green and sky-blue melt into a monstrous idyll that only just approximates the idea of a landscape.
In reality, our gaze into the beyond is met with a wall of color. Tina Haber. RE 1- Interieur Wald auf Papier. Palmen und Pool.
